Conversation between members of the Cysur y Sêr team
Description
4 of the Cysur y Sêr team come together to discuss their work on the project: Tamar Williams (storyteller), Fiona Collins (storyteller), Mair Tomos Ifans (storyteller), Dani Robertson (Dark Sky Officer, Eryri).
This conversation includes:
1. A brief introduction to each person's work.
2. A quick outline of the Cysur y Sêr project.
3. Dani Robertson: what was the situation with the mythology of the stars in Wales before the project? How did people connect with the stars?
- Not a lot of information available, only old names, need to follow the threads from one story/old name to another and find connections between communities.
- Hearing old stories/names about the constellations from Wales has the effect of connecting people specifically with their landscape and their ancestors.
4. Mair Tomos Ifans: a discussion of her research into old literature from the 19th and early 20th centuries about the stars, to include:
- Lack of evidence linking old names with whole stories.
- Evidence in the old volumes about people being amazed at the stars, looking up to the stars for comfort, especially when families migrated to the other side of the world.
- Twr Tewdws – an old name for the Pleiades.
- Old names for the Milky Way.
- Old poetry from the volumes referring to the stars.
- The connection between the worship of the creator (God) and the old mythology, the fairies etc., and how this was not a dichotomy but rather embraced.
- Mair's original song.
5. Fiona Collins: discussion of her work on the project, including:
- Oral collection work with Merched y Wawr groups.
- The proverbs and old names she found e.g. Twm Elias Collection, The Weather, Marie Trevelyan's book and the proverb about the plough, Finding an old name for Orion's Belt, which is Cogail y Forwyn/Llathen Mair.
6. Looking towards the future, what is the work to be done next?
- Excitement about the potential for storytellers to share these stories further and for the old memories/mythology to enrich our work.
- Connecting the magic of the old stories with science in order to bring people closer to the night sky.
