Courtaulds factory, Flint

Description

In 1897 work commenced on the erection of a small paper-mill on the banks of the Swinchard Brook. The mill did not operate for long and in 1903 it was converted into a textile factory. This is believed to be the Holywell Textile Mill, a mercerising works (for the treatment of cotton with an alkaline solution to improve its properties). In 1922 Courtaulds acquired the site and developed and expanded it considerably, renaming it Deeside Mill. The Mill closed in 1989 and has since been built over by the Aber Park Industrial Estate and the Flintshire Retail Centre.
