Kitchen in a prefab house in Bishpool near Newport DI2012_0042

Description

This photograph of a kitchen in a prefab house in Bishpool near Newport, was taken in 2003 just before its demolition. The prefab kitchen has many modern additions such as the microwave oven and strip lighting, but the light, airy, modern design has changed little since it was first built in the 1950s. Prefabs were designed by the Ministry of Works to provide much needed temporary homes after the Second World War, and were built round the central core of a fitted kitchen with a fridge and cooker, hot running water, built-in storage and electric lighting and sockets.
