Gill and Mike talk on a bridge over the river Garw about learning to swim in the river with dead sheep floating past. The water was black with coal dust. Cows came down to drink. As children they camped, played with goats, stole coal, fished for eels, played cricket, built 'shanties' on the mountain, lit fires and played cards with a 'look-out' for the police.
