Mary Elizabeth Phillips was the first woman to qualify as a doctor from Cardiff University College at the turn of the century and became known as Mary 'Eppynt' Phillips, taking the name of the mountain near where she was born in Merthyr Cynog, near Brecon. During the First World War she treated wounded soldiers in hospitals across Europe, including Calais, Malta and Serbia, as well as raising considerable funds in Britain for the activities of the Scottish Women's Hospital. She is pictured here centre of the picture - four from the left in the middle row.
