Ynyslas Rocket Firing Test Track, September 1951
Description
Aerial photographs in the Royal Commission's collections can help us to piece together clues about the facilities that were available for the rocket scientists.
Although taken on the 20 September 1951 (some 5 years after the missile project moved to Aberporth), the lower lefthand quarter of this image shows one of the firing test tracks.
The track comprised an overhead gantry fixed onto concrete bases. Rocket propulsion units could be test-fired up the estuary onto the mud and sand flats. If you zoom in, you can see the concrete bases very clearly.
