Margam Abbey
Description
Margam Abbey, Samuel Prout (1783-1852). Early 19th century. Watercolour
In 1801 the young Samuel Prout was employed by John Britton to make some of the drawings for his engraved volume 'Beauties of England and Wales', published in 1803-13. As a result he became famous for his depictions of picturesque old buildings. This highly finished watercolour depicts Margam Abbey, which had recently been refurbished by Thomas Mansel Talbot after petitions from local parishioners, who had become increasingly worried about its state of disrepair.
Purchased, 1925. NMW A 3221
