Garreg Flaen-llym and the reservoirs, detail plan and section drawing of top dam, 2002
Pencil, ink and watercolour on paper
Garreg Flaen-llym is the prominent rock that towers over Blaenau Ffestiniog on the west side. The two reservoirs, impounded by stone-faced dams on this challenging site, supplied water to slate mills on the upper levels of the Oakeley quarries. The plan records various small buildings and other elements of this remote landscape of quarrying. At the summit of the mountain can be found the remains of a rock cannon, a form of traditional celebration whereby a series of holes were drilled in the rock, filled with gunpowder and fired in sequence to produce a rhythm or tune.
