The Crown Hotel, Pontypool

Description

The Mitre In was on this site from as far back as 1816. When replaced by The Crown Hotel it became the stopping point for stage coaches and the Royal Mail service.
The Crown played a big part in the history of the town - such as hosting a Coronation Dinner for Queen Victoria in 1838. It had 28 bedrooms, an indoor gymnasium, banqueting hall and two smoke rooms.
It lost its licence in the 1920's and became Woolworths in 1923. This closed in 2009 and now Iceland occupies this impressive building.
