Rhuddlan

Description

Aerial view of rhuddlan. The stone castle built by Edward I it to the lef tof centre. However, the first castle, known as Twthill, of the Motte and Bailey type, predated it and was built by Robert of Rhuddlan in 1067. However, twthill may ocupy the site of an even earlier castle of the earth and timber type, built by Gruffydd ap Llewelyn. The Mound of the castle remains to this date and is located at 9o'clock to the stone castle, beyond the small copse of trees and is the light brown (parched grassland) next to the caravan site and overlooking the River Clwyd below it.
