Edward John Richard Thomas was born in Glamorgan on 14 October 1883, and died in France on 7th July 1916.

"Dick" Thomas was a forward who gained 4 caps against South Africa in 1906, France in 1908, Ireland in 1908 and Scotland in 1908.

He played for Ferndale, Penygraig, Mountain Ash and Bridgend.

He was a policeman. He won the Glamorgan Police Heavyweight Boxing Championship.
Dick was promoted to the rank of Sergeant in the police in 1913. In January 1915 he enlisted in the Welch Regiment. He was promoted to the rank of Company Sergeant Major.

He lost his life in action at Mametz Wood during the Battle of the Somme.
