Post Card. ‘Bathing machines’ Aberystwyth, north beach, Ceredigion c. 1910
Description
This Edwardian picture shows the rows of ‘bathing machines’ where the swimmers changed. These huts on wheels (so that they could be drawn into the sea if required) were popularized by George IV when Prince Regent. The leading royal seaside resort in those days was Brighton and the Brighton waterfront stimulated other resorts to follow suit and Aberystwyth was described in contemporary guide books as ‘The Brighton of Wales’. Photograph c. 1910.
