1995.1.3 - These bones form part of a whale’s hearing apparatus. Whales don’t have external ears. Sound travels differently in water and in air, so the whale’s ear canal evolved to be filled with fatty tissue. This allows the whale to tell where sounds are coming from underwater. Unlike human ear bones, they are not attached to the skull.
