Bluebells by Lady de Winton
Description
488.32 - This watercolour of Hyacinthoides non-scripta was painted by Mary Davidona de Winton, of Llanfrynach, Brecknockshire (1866-1961). This species probably grew wild around Mary’s home and flowers from April to May. From the eighteenth century to the early twentieth century wealthy women were encouraged to study botany. There were professional female botanical artists, but it was not considered respectable for a lady to earn money.
