Rock Formations

Description

The first image is of an ink, watercolour and gouache painting on paper, created by John Piper circa 1950.

The second image is a photograph of the landscape depicted in the painting. This was taken by Amgueddfa Cymru / National Museum Wales in 2014.

Rock Formations is a later version of Rocks on Tryfan. In this work Piper has depicted the lower set of rocks in greater detail. There is a prominent bulbous form, which appears to protrude from the rock face, but in reality it recedes. Again we see strong blue-grey lines sweeping over the top, perhaps indicating harsh winter conditions.
