Rocks at Capel Curig

Description

The first image is of an ink, watercolour and gouache painting on paper, created by John Piper circa 1950.

The second image is a photograph of the landscape depicted in the painting. This was taken by Amgueddfa Cymru / National Museum Wales in 2014.

This distinctive set of rocks is known locally as the ‘Ricks and Racks’. They are located just
outside the village of Capel Curig. The only man-made feature Piper describes is the fence running
horizontally and vertically up the slope. This watercolour was the model for a larger oil painting,
Mountain Rocks, North Wales.
