Description

Portrait of John Roberts (Ieuan Gwyllt) 1822-77 and his wife Jane Richards. John Roberts was a minister and a Welsh musician who was known as Ieuan Gwyllt, a name that he used when writing a poem as a young boy. He was an avid composer of hymns and founded several music festivals including the Gwent and Morgannwg. He was also a conductor and an editor of a number of Welsh periodicals. He was born near Aberystwyth in 1822 and died in Caernarvon in 1877.

The woman pictured with John Roberts is his wife, Jane Richards, from Aberystwyth, who he married in 1859. Gilt has been used to highlight her jewellery and colour has been added to the table cloth on which she is resting her arm.
