Policeman's nightstick, cutlass and scabbard, 19th century

Description

Cutlasses were not issued to police constables as general items of equipment but kept within the police station for issue on certain duties. These included night patrols in dangerous areas, such as patrols in graveyards to protect against bodysnatchers, and dealing with riots.
