The 'Kerridge Cucumber', a Home Guard Grenade, 1940-41

Description

This rare relic of 1940-41 took the place of the Mills Bomb or Hand-Grenade, to throw at the enemy. Many, including this example, were made unofficially for the Home Guard by blacksmiths at Wern Tarw Colliery. They were known as 'Kerridge Cucumbers' and were nearly twice as powerful as the standard Mills Grenade. According to those who tried them, they were almost as terrifying for the user as for the recipient.
