Bull's Eye Lantern, 1830

Description

Carried throughout the Victorian era, these lamps held a small circular reservoir which was filled with oil and the wick lit before the police officer went on night duty. An internal shield linked to the smoke vents on top of the lamp body could be turned to block out the light. They were smoky, hot, smelly and produced very little light, but were still in use in the Glamorgan Constabulary in the 1920s.
