Snips, used for restraint of arrested suspects, mid 19th century
Description
Snips were purchased privately by many policemen in the Victorian era and remained in use until the 1950s. They were considered insecure by police authorities and in the hands of a strong policeman could inflict great pain or even break the wrist of a prisoner. The closed part of the snips were literally snapped onto the prisoner's wrist and the open part was held by the police officer.
