Bugle and Banner, recording the Shrievelty of Edward Morel, 1933

Description

Silver bugle and banner recording the Shrievelty of Edward Morel in 1933. The Shire Reeve/Sheriff was the Monarch's representative in the County and was responsible, amongst other things, for protecting visiting Assize Judges during the 19th century. In Cardiff and Swansea the Glamorgan and Swansea Police provided officers to escort them to and from Court. In Swansea they carried 18th century halberds and until 1969 were a popular sight in the Borough. The tradition was briefly resurrected in the 1980s.
