Evans writes that the miners came to show him the letter they had received from Legg and notes that 'they seemed much pleased with its tone'. He told the men that as he did not wish to become involved in the matter he would not make any comment. However, he informs Legg that he is willing to make further inquiries on his behalf and provide an 'impartial report on the whole affair'. Moreover, he says that it is clear that many of the miners' grievances were not mentioned in their letter. Evans assumes that the person who wrote the letter on their behalf was probably unwilling to include them 'partly from a fear of implicating himself and partly from ignorance of the mining technicalities their statement involved'.
