Letter from L. P. H. [Lewis 'Patagonia' Humphreys] to Mrs Anne Jones, 1 August 1870 [image 1 of 4]

Description

In this letter to Mrs Anne Jones, Lewis Humphreys states that he is glad to hear that her husband, the Rev. Michael D. Jones, and Dr Pan Jones have been successful in the United States. The two men had travelled to the United States in 1870 to raise money for Bala Independent College and to promote the Patagonian Settlement.

Humphreys had received a letter from a native of Pembrokeshire who emigrated to Australia, informing him that he would like to emigrate to Patagonia. Also, Humphreys had recently read a letter written by Mr [Abraham] Matthews from Patagonia, in which he praised the land but complained about the lack of educational facilities for children. Having said that he is going to do all in his power to persuade more Welsh people to emigrate to Patagonia from Australia, Humphreys ends his letter by stating his intention of returning to Patagonia as soon as possible.
