Carved wooden dog from the gateway of Acton Park, Wrexham, 1820
Description
This carved wooden greyhound is one of four which originally sat on top of the gateway to Acton Park, Wrexham. The gateway was built in 1820 and the four dogs were carved by James Edwards of Lavister. The original tail was made of metal and was attached to the wooden body of the dog.
The greyhound used to sit on top of the coat of arms of the Cunliffe family who owned Acton Park throughout the nineteenth century. The Cunliffe family lived in Acton Hall which was situated in the grounds of Acton Park. The dog was christened 'Quercus' by the pupils of Acton Park School - Quercus is the Latin name for the oak family of trees.
