Book owned by Hugh Pugh Jones, Pen-y-Bryn farm, Dyffryn
Description
This book with the title In Memory of the following Officers, Non-Commissioned Officers and Men of the Welsh Guards contains the names of all those 'Who have died in the Service of their Country Since the Formation of the Regiment on 27th February 1915'. The book is a simple white hardback with the regimental coat of arms embossed in green on its cover.
The recto book board has been inscribed 'Pt Hugh Pugh Jones No/3081 / Welsh Guards / No/6. Company / 2nd Reserve Batt. / Ranelagh Camp / Barnes.S.W. 13 / London'. At the bottom of the page the date of the inscription has been corrected from 'Tachwedd' to 'Chwefror 27, 1918'.
The cover and inside pages are copiously decorated by a child's pencil doodles and scrawled letters.
In addition to the names of deceased soldiers of the Welsh Regiment, the book also contains an 'Order of Service' which includes readings from the Bible, hymns and 'Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau' in Welsh and English translation as well as the British national anthem.
This document was brought to the attention of the U-Boat Project 1914-18 by Hugh Pugh Jones's granddaughter, Hilda Harris, Dyffryn Ardudwy, who kindly allowed us to scan it.
