Welsh Costume china, cup and saucer, Sabbath day
Description
A small cup and saucer with black and white transfers of three different Welsh costume prints.
(1) on saucer: 'Welsh Costume'. Print of Newman (small) no. 2 except that the woman in the middle has a jug on her head and the hats are slightly different shapes.
(2) 'Welsh Costumes' Group of three women in front of a stone wall, each with large packages or baskets on their heads. Those on the left and right seem to have used their aprons to carry something bulky. This image is not known in the Newman and Co.'s or Rock and Co.'s series of Welsh costume prints.
(3) 'Sabbath Day in Wales'. Similar to Newman (small) no. 9
size: saucer diameter: 13.7 cms; cup height: 6.6 cms.
No maker's marks.
Date: mid to late 19th century.
