Gwaun-cae-gurwen, Hen Garmel Independent Chapel

Description

Gwaun-cae-gurwen, Hen Garmel Independent Chapel
Sited on Heol Hir on the mountain side above Gwaun-cae-gurwen. It was first incorporated as a church in 1822 although there was a schoolhouse on the site before that.
Hen Garmel means "Old Carmel", the building has been demolished but the large burial ground is still used
Carmel Independent Chapel [New], opened in 1877, stands on the main road through the village.
This building replaced Hen Garmel when the village developed in its present position.
The history of both chapels is contained in the book Annibynwyr Gwaun-Cae-Gurwen, see
