Letter from the Mayor of Haverfordwest re. the demolition of Haverfordwest Castle, 13 July 1648

Description

Letter from the Mayor and council of Haverfordwest to Oliver Cromwell and the committee, stating that the demolition of the castle has begun but requesting gunpowder and financial assistance from other hundreds of Pembrokeshire in order to complete the work. Dated 13 July 1648.

Transcription:

'Honored Sir,

Wee receaved an order from your honour and the Committee for the demolishinge of the Castle of Haverfordwest: Accordinge to which wee have this daie sett some workemen aboute it, but wee finde the worke soe difficulte to be broughte aboute without Powder to blowe it up, that it will exhaust an Immense some of money and will not in a longe time be effected: Wherefore wee become suitors to your honour that there may a competent quantity of powder be spared out of the shipps for the speedy effectinge the worke Wee and the Countye payinge for the same And wee likewise desire that your honour and the Comittee be pleased that the whole Countie may ioyne with us in the worke and that an order may be conceived for the leveyinge of a Competent some of money on the severall hundreds of the Countie for the payinge for the powder and defreyinge the rest of the charge. Thus beinge overbold to be troublesome to your honour desiringe to knowe your honours resolve herein wee rest.
