Welsh costume: flannel 'betgwn' or bedgown, 19th century (front view) [image 1 of 3]

Description

Flannel 'betgwn' or bedgown with black and red vertical stripe. Bodice is fastened with three ties made from black tape. Sleeves decorated with a band of white lace. The front corners of the gown have been stitched to the back of the waist.

Also featured is a woollen petticoat or underskirt with red and black vertical stripes. The fabric has been pleated into narrow white cotton waistband fastened at the back with a covered button. There are two deep pintucks above the hemline.
