At the end of the First World War the German submarine fleet, of around 200 vessels, surrendered. Most were purchased by entrepreneurs and scrap merchants. Many were put on display before being scrapped. The Coastal Attack type 111 UB 98 ended up in Porthmadog and the public allowed on board for a small charge. The submarine was scrapped in 1922 but several remnants survive to this day. Clough Williams-Ellis, the builder of Portmeirion obtained bronze nuts which were draped around the top of the Llanfrothen memorial; Plates were used in fabricating a tunnel on the Ffestiniog Railway and parts of valves used in the construction of small hydro-electric schemes in the district.
