Welsh Asian Heritage Project

The Welsh Asian Heritage Project highlights the remarkable stories of Asian migrant communities, particularly of Ugandan Asians who were expelled by Idi Amin in1972 including those who were accommodated in the reception camp at Tonfanau, Merioneth, North Wales.

80,000 Asians were expelled from Uganda in 1972 by Idi Amin. 28,000 with British passports were accepted into the UK and 1700 were accommodated at the Tonfanau Camp.

1.6 million Indian labourers were taken under Girmit contracts to various colonial countries during the 19th and early 20th centuries, including East African countries, to fulfil labour shortages following the abolition of slavery in the British Empire.

We recorded a small sample of stories by interviewing thirty-three people, the majority Ugandan Asians with a few contributors from Kenya, Tanzania, Fiji, and India, capturing their contributions to community building, setting up businesses, religious and cultural organisations, to sports and to equality, to mention a few of the achievements.

The Welsh Asian Heritage Project is a community engagement project of the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales and funded by the Welsh Government as part of its Anti-racist Wales programme.
