Chain Bridge Project

The project is restoring the Chain Bridge found just outside Llangollen at Berwyn. The first bridge on the site was built by Exuperius Pickering in 1817. Although it looks like a simple wooden bridge underneath the deck was a series of chain links made of wrought iron. This provided stability for the rickety looking bridge. When this bridge was replaced in the 1870s Henry Robertson reused the chain links. The links were used once more when the third and final bridge was built in 1929 as a suspension bridge. The bridge was closed in the mid 1980s as it was unsafe. The Chain Bridge Project will restore the bridge to allow pedestrain access once more.
