The Ladies of Llangollen: Sarah Butler (1739-1829) and Eleanor Ponsonby (1755-1831)

Sarah Butler and Eleanor Ponsonby were Anglo-Irish aristocrats who eloped from Ireland and their domineering families who tried to keep the women apart. They retired to the Welsh countryside to live with each other for the rest of their lives. For their lifestyle they became noted celebrities of their day and a touristic curiosity. These days they have become important LGBTQ+ icons.
