Archie Thomas WW2 RN Beach Commando Collection

Archie Thomas (1923-) is the last surviving member of the elite Royal Navy Beach Commandos from WW2 and was interviewed and filmed by Age Cymru Dyfed for the West Wales Veterans Archive in May 2024, at his son's house in Margam.

This collection features the filmed interview, a written description of Archie's wartime service including his service as member of the Port Talbot 'Town Home Guard', his training to become one of only 3000 Royal Navy Beach Commandos during WW2, and the part he played in 'Operation Husky', ie the invasion of Sicily in 1943 during which he was badly injured in an air attack made by three Ju 87 Stuka Dive Bombers. The collection also includes several of Archie's wartime photos but also photos of Archie taken in July 2024, when alongside 4 other WW2 veterans (with an average age of 100yrs old), he took part in the Age Cymru Dyfed WW2 shooting event which was thoroughly enjoyed by all.
