Letter from Corporal John Griffith Jones, Camp Bates, Kentucky, to his family in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin, 28 September 1862 [page 1 of 2]

Description

Writing from the camp, situated six miles from Cincinnati, John again emphasises that he is as well as he has ever been.

On the 27th of the month, his brigade took part in a review in front of the Brigadier General. There were about six thousand of them and they were all beautifully turned out. There was also a brass band which made an incredible noise.

They had to walk six miles to reach the site of the review but according to John, the 23rd batallion receive much praise wherever they go.

They had been on a picket last week, four miles from the camp.
John writes that they attend school on a Sunday and that it is quite a light day.
