Description
Kitty Francis Childhood Memories of Pontycymer during WW2 audio: In this fascinating if short audio recording, Kitty remembers her time as child during WW2 in Pontycymer, where she still lives today. She talks about hearing the air raid warnings when in school. Evacuees, and the impact and terrible loss of life from Luftwaffe bombing, but also the morale boosting games the local population played including ‘hitting the nail in Hitler’s coffin! In 1944 when aged just 9yrs of age, Kitty learned that her beloved older brother, Dilwyn, an RAF Navigator, had been killed on operations over Germany. In June 2021, Kitty attended the Age Cymru Dyfed WW2 Veterans event along with her grand daughter, Catrin Jones who volunteers with the West Wales Veterans Archive and is also a member of the Royal British Legion (Llanelli) Band. Catrin has been an Army reservist.
