Crown of Thorns by Harry Comley

Description

This is a photograph of a sculpture created by Harry Comley about 1988/1989. The sculpture is a crown of thorns which houses a rock that was brought back from Calvary to Wales by Father Cunnane, the priest of the Our Lady of the Taper church in Cardigan at the time. The idea behind the sculpture was to allow the rock to be displayed but protected from theft or vandalism. Harry themed the sculpture after the passion of Christ, using the three nails, Hammer, scroll and thorns to link the stone to its case. The sculpture developed as Harry sculpted it. It was completed twice, but the Father made requests of the Sculptor and the piece developed into the final version on display in the church today.
