POLICE HELICOPTER UNIT
Description
Frederick Maine Thomas of the Glamorgan Constabulary and South Wales Constabulary. He retired from the police in 1981, hoding the rank of Superintendent.
The photos show police helicopter training in its very early days. I believe that the photos date from 1967.
The shoulder patches fitted to the police officers overalls, show 'POLICE HELICOPTER UNIT'.
Training appears to have been at the base of the Air Platoon, 3rd Battalion, Parachute Regiment.
The aircraft shown is an American, Bell H-13 Sioux single-engine light helicopter, built by Bell Helicopter and manufactured by Westland Aircraft under license for the British military as the Sioux AH.1 and HT.2
