Emigration - Eos Gwynant

Description

Paths of life; Stories about people who emigrated from slate quarries of North Wales.

Mr Owen R Williams, known as Eos Gwynant, was a poet. He emigrated to America to work in the Granville slate quarry. Work was scarce, so he returned to Wales to work in Abercynon colliery. He spent a quarter of a century working for Cwm Dyli Electricity Company. He wrote this piece in November 1909, describing the lack of work in the Granville slate quarry, New York;

"We received the following letter from Granville, New York, from the well-known friend Eos Gwynant and we give him the opportunity to speak for himself.

I told you that the world of Quarries was 'flaming'. I'm sorry to say that that this has changed, the wheel has turned the 'stoking' stone. It is not possible to get a day of work, we rather turn away. As things have changed, I get scolded and accused for informing the "RHEDEGYDD." I wouldn't like to see anyone come here, and not be able to get work. I advise the residents of Meirion, Arfon, and Mon, not to come at this time to this part of the country. Will you be so kind as to inform this in advance, so that the Granville boys can see that I am clear to everyone, everywhere. Best wishes to you all. O.R.W. (Eos Gwynant)"
