Archbishop Makarious Operation Apollo HMS Loch Fada
Description
This is a copy of an original photograph belonging to Mr John Roberts RN retired. The image captured the Greek figure Archbishop Makarious with a companion and a British Army officer aboard a small vessel, with RN Sailors from HMS Loch Fada in the background. The photograph captures events during Operation Apollo in March 1956, when the Archbishop was exiled from the island of Cyprus. He was conveyed into exile on the Seychelle islands by HMS Loch Fada. John Roberts was on board the Loch Fada during the incident. John's recollections of the ship's involvement in Operation Apollo can be heard online in the John Roberts collection at the West Wales Veterans Archive on the Peoples collection Wales website.
