HMS Battelaxe paying off party
Description
This is a copy of an original photograph that belongs to Mr John Roberts RN retired. It captures a moment in time, when the Captain of HMS Battelaxe, Jack Maidwell and his Petty Officers gathered together in the Queens hotel, Southsea at the end of the 1959 to 1960 deployment, before the ship's crew went their separate ways. Captain Jack can be seen seated, wearing a bow tie and with his eyes closed on the right of the image as you look at it. John can be seen seated on the far left smiling with his thumb pointing up. John's wife Lucy is seated at the table in the spotted dress, sat next to the ship's engineer. John's story of the deployment along with photographs and interviews with John, can be viewed online in the John Roberts collection at the West Wales Veterans Archive on the Peoples collection Wales website.
