This is a photograph of the General Service Medal issued to RAF Photographer Nigel Hopkins, following a four month tour of duty in Northern Ireland completed from September 1979. The medals below Nigel's GSM are his fathers set of mess medals. His father was David Owen Gareth Hopkins who served with an administration unit during the Burma campaign against the imperial Japanese Army. Nigel's memoirs of his service in the RAF, supported my photographs, can be viewed on line in the Nigel Hopkins RAF collection at the West Wales Veterans Archive on the Peoples Collection Wales website.
