'The Bridge' magazine by Taibach County Youth Centre, issue 1, July 1942

Description

'The Bridge' magazine was published by Taibach County Youth Centre, a youth club based at Eastern School, Port Talbot (now Taibach Community Education Centre). It was presumably named after the railway bridge which crossed the road next to the school, now demolished.

The inside page of the magazine lists the officers of the youth centre, the junior leaders, and the magazine committee. R.W. Jenkins, better known as Richard Burton, is notable as a junior leader in 'Dramatics'.

Members of the youth centre contributed articles to the magazine, which focused on the activities of the club. This includes a report on the centre's entry to the youth eisteddfod, where Richard Jenkins (Burton) took third place, summaries of the various clubs which took place at the centre including the discussion group, dramatics, arts and crafts, and sport. It also has articles of interest to its members, including a history of Eastern School and short stories.

The effects of the Second World War are noted in the editorial which asks the reader to pass the copy onto a friend when they have finished reading it 'helping to get over the difficult of the paper shortage'.
