Interview (part 1) with Channi Kaler

Description

Channi, born Gurcharan Singh Kaler on September 19, 1943, in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, shares that he moved to Wales in 1962 to study civil engineering. He describes his academic journey and eventual career as a chartered engineer, while reflecting on his early life in Dar es Salaam, where he had fond memories of swimming with his father and attending the Gurdwara. He outlines his transition to Cardiff, where he was one of the few Sikh students at the university, and how he integrated into community life through sports. Throughout the interview, Channi mentions his positive experiences in Wales, including his lack of significant racial discrimination, and his decision to settle permanently in Cardiff, influenced by his educational and social opportunities as well as connections to the local Sikh community. Channi narrates the establishment of the Gurdwara in Cardiff, highlighting its origins in a school hall and its eventual purchase of a building in 1979, which had previously been a Baptist chapel. He describes the fundraising and community involvement that led to the Gurdwara’s development and shares anecdotes about the early management committee. Channi discusses contributions made by the Sikh community, including educational initiatives, like starting Punjabi and Tharma classes to reinforce cultural and religious knowledge among children. The interview encapsulates Channi's life story, his love for Wales, and his commitment to fostering the Sikh community's growth and traditions in Cardiff.
