ED: …Lady who succeeded in a man's world.
Um, I have got a piece about her aye there we are. In this period of 1941 to the early 50s, a competitor from West Gower area which always created interest was Miss Blodwyn Hughes of Cathan Farm, Llangennith. Blodwyn competed with horses from a tender age until she married in 1952. If ever there was a case of a woman holding her own in a man's world, then this was it. She ploughed all over Gower, in matches held in Three Crosses, Thistleboone, Mumbles, Pennard and Park Mill in addition to the West Gower Society matches, which she never missed. She was seldom out of the prize money and reached her peak in 51 / 52 seasons when she won the cup two years in succession, beating formidable champions Jack Tanner and Albert Watkins. If she had kept her groom waiting a further 12 months and maybe she would have won the trophy outright, you had to win it three times to win it outright.
