Swansea Rural Development Partnership

'Stories of a Changing Landscape, a Farmer’s Perspective' is a project commissioned by the Swansea Rural Development Partnership’s Local Action Group to highlight the mental health challenges faced by farmers and land-based workers. Farming's physical and emotional demands—exacerbated by isolation, financial pressures, and stigma—have led to high suicide rates, with male agricultural workers nearly twice as likely to take their own lives. The project aims to break long-standing taboos around mental health in farming communities by encouraging open dialogue and linking people to support services.

The initiative also documents the agricultural heritage of Gower and rural Swansea to preserve local traditions and strengthen community wellbeing. Created by filmmaker Florence Browne and photographer Callum Baker, the exhibition shares intimate stories from farmers, promoting understanding and empathy while giving agricultural workers a platform to be heard. The project is part of the Swansea RDP LEADER programme and supported by several partner organisations, funded by the Welsh Government and the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development.
