Roland Pritchard Weobley Castle Farm, Llanrhidian, Gower chats to RDP Officers Sian Green and Vicki Thompson about Gower Salt Marsh Lamb (Protected Designated Origin Status)
Description
Roland: Right…Hi, I'm Roland Pritchard, Weobley Castle Farm, Llanrhidian, and I'm the chairman of Gower Salt Marsh Lamb. I've been farming all my life. I took over from my father many years ago, and we were selling lambs, nationally, through the local marts. Um…we would get in a lot of money at the time I can remember , sort of just about £20 pound a lamb in that sort of region. And so we decided to go and sell our own Salt Marsh Lamb because we've heard that Salt Marsh Lamb had a bit of a premium on it and it was well respected, particularly by the French at the time. It wasn't really well known in this country, but um…we’ve gone from there, we set up a little cooperative, and a local farmer joined in with me. We formed a little company called Gower Salt Marsh Lamb, and we started doing 30 - 40 lambs a year and now we've built the company up and we’re doing nearly 1000 lambs a year… We were very fortunate that last year we got our own PDO status, which helped us enormously publicly and it got us known nationally all around the country. And since our name has got out nationwide, the sales have just boomed and we are very proud of it.
