Roland Pritchard Weobley Castle Farm, Llanrhidian, Gower discusses what Gower Salt Marsh Lamb Protected Designated Origin Status means to him and its economic benefit
Description
Roland: We were very pleased to get the PDO, which is Protected Designated Origin. We were very lucky enough that we applied for it four or five years before, and it took long time with the paperwork. And then, we went into Brexit, and everything went on hold. And then, when it eventually came through, we happened to be the first company in Britain to get it after Brexit. So we had an awful lot of publicity about the PDO status. What it does mean is that nobody else can sell Gower Salt Marsh Lamb, unless they meet the strict criteria that we've put in place.
So if you have Gower Salt Marsh Lamb anywhere in the country, it's coming from here.
Right, sorry, what was I going to talk about then?
Interviewer Vicki Thompson: What it means to you?
Roland: What it means to us is that the definition of it is that we've got to get all the lambs killed on Gower. That's a little bit of a problem, because there's only one slaughter house on Gower, so we are hoping we get and stay on good terms with them…Um, and we’ve got to do the packaging ourselves and it’s labelled, and we've got to have a list of all the times that the sheep are on the marsh, off the marsh, and whenever we treat them for any worms or blowfly or anything like that.
So it's quite a strict discipline to control.
Interviewer Vicki Thompson: So what does that mean to you as a business to have that accolade?
Roland: Well, we’re very pleased to have it, obviously. And It is mainly it’s publicity is what we've gained out of it, because it seems that everywhere we go now people have heard of Gower Salt Marsh Lamb. And as you say the sales have just gone berserk since we’ve had it…yeah.
