Elenora, [Edward] Howell and Caroline Williams of Ysgiach Ganol Farm, Felindre, Swansea chat to RDP Officer Vicki Thompson about family succession and who could afford to stay on the farm.
Description
[Edward] Howell: Well, there there…there was an option I did go as a motor mechanic to start with and then I came back in…82/3…and been back ever since. When we took over, we had two separate holdings. Then my father farmed here, we farmed over there. And we just, well, because father passed away, they retired, so I took all of the whole lot then so… Um… Yeah.
Caroline: But you’ve always wanted to farm, yeah?
[Edward] Howell: I’ve always wanted to come back, yes.
Caroline: Even when you were working…
[Edward] Howell: Yes, weekends and nights and stuff.
Elenora: You didn't want to come back farming, but…
[Edward] Howell: I wanted to come back.
Caroline: Geraint didn't want to come back, did he?
[Edward] Howell: No, my brother didn't come back
Caroline: Because there's two of them.
[Edward] Howell: So yeah, we’ve been back ever since. But obviously, the prices of stock doesn't… quite allow for me to stay home full time, you know, so I go back out to work then. I work in Carmarthen, also work in a local farm, um… which is about four miles down the road.
Caroline: You’re a drover.
[Edward] Howell: …drover then in Carmarthen, which I'm there three days a week so it takes up a lot of my time, like at weekends I’m free do things at… at home, yeah, so… But it’s seasonal work so I do take time off, you know? So, yeah.
